Taleghan Earthquake of 16 December 1808, Ms=5.9

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=5.9 occurred in the western parts of Mazandaran and Taleghan regions in Iran on Dec. 16, 1808, at 18:00 in local time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 36.4N and 50.3E. The event devastated many villages in the epicentral region with the estimated intensity of about I0=VII. The seismic motions were strongly felt in Rasht. The event destroyed several houses in Qazvin and damaged the Imamzadeh Qasem in north of Tehran.

Kashan Earthquake of 15 December 1778, Ms6.1

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=6.1 occurred in the western side of desert in Iran on Dec. 15, 1778, at 6:00:00 GMT. The earthquake was strongly felt in Ray, Qom and Isfahan cities and the epicentral intensity was estimated to be I0=VIII. The event claimed about 8000 lives in the city of Kashan and destroyed almost all the houses, main buildings and castles in the city. Heavy damages were distributed in a wide area from Sansan village to Qohrood village located in the north and south of Kashan, respectively. Due to this event, water supply of the epicentral region was damaged and Cholera disease was spread. Daily aftershocks of the earthquake continued for a month. The earthquake of 1778 in Kashan destroyed the towers and ramparts of Jalali castle, but by the order of Karim Khan the castle was repaired again by the governor of Kashan, Abdolrazzagh Khan and two gates were added to the five gates of the castle. There are no evidences which confirm any damages to the historical structures such as the Jameh mosque and Zayn-al-Din Minaret of Kashan.

Zur Earthquake of 18 November 1226, Ms6.5

On Nov. 18, 1226, an earthquake of magnitude Ms=6.5 occurred in Zur, Kurdistan province of Iran which was widely felt in Iran and Iraq. The epicenter of the earthquake was assessed to be located at 35.3N and 46E. The event destroyed six castles and many villages in the macroseismic region. The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks during next month.

Quchan Earthquake of 17 November 1893, Ms7.1

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=7.1 occurred in the south of Quchan in Khorasan province of Iran on Non. 17, 1893, at 15:00:00 GMT. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 37N and 58.4E. The event claimed about 5000 lives in the city of Quchan and more than 10,000 lives in the Atrak Valley. Due to the strong shaking, most of the public facilities such as a Telegraph office, 1100 shop in Bazaar, school, mosque, caravansary and historic palace of Ilkhan were severely damaged in Quchan and many ground surface fissures and landslides were triggered in the Atrak Valley. The earthquake was felt  throughout Turkmenistan and also in Tehran in 640 km far away. The ground movements were recorded by a Seismoscope in Ashgabat.

Korizan-Khaf Earthquake of 14 November 1979, Ms6.6

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=6.6 and mb=6 occurred in the Ghaenat region of Khorasan province in Iran on Non. 14, 1979, at 5:51:00 a.m. local time, (2:21:00 GMT). The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 33.92N and 59.74E. The event destroyed Korizan, Estand and Bahn-Abad villages, claiming about 420 lives. Most of the casualties were children, since most of the adults were outside at work (harvesting their Saffron fields). The Korizan-Khaf earthquake was associated with a rupture length of 20 km along the Quaternary faults with about 1 m vertical displacements. During the earthquake, 10 analog accelerographs started to work up to 182 km distance around the epicenter.
