Darb Astaneh Silakhor Earthquake of 31 March 2006, ML=6.1

On March 31, 2006 at 4:47 (local time) and 01:17 (UTC time), a strong earthquake with magnitude of ML=6.1 occurred in Darb Astaneh region, west of Iran. This was preceded by two large foreshocks and followed by about 200 aftershocks. The focal mechanism of this earthquake was right lateral strike slip with a slope of 67° along the Dorud fault. The event was recorded by 26 accelerographs in the Iran strong motion network (ISMN). The maximum PGA was 446 and 336 cm/s2, respectively for the two horizontal components and the maximum vertical PGA was 561 cm/s2 in the Chalan chulan station. Due to the 31 March 2006 earthquake, 67 people were killed and 1246 people were injured. The earthquake induced many secondary geological hazards such as landslides, soil liquefaction and surface fissures. It also caused extensive damages to many buildings over a large area in Lorestan province.
