Quchan Earthquake of 17 November 1893, Ms7.1

An earthquake of magnitude Ms=7.1 occurred in the south of Quchan in Khorasan province of Iran on Non. 17, 1893, at 15:00:00 GMT. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 37N and 58.4E. The event claimed about 5000 lives in the city of Quchan and more than 10,000 lives in the Atrak Valley. Due to the strong shaking, most of the public facilities such as a Telegraph office, 1100 shop in Bazaar, school, mosque, caravansary and historic palace of Ilkhan were severely damaged in Quchan and many ground surface fissures and landslides were triggered in the Atrak Valley. The earthquake was felt  throughout Turkmenistan and also in Tehran in 640 km far away. The ground movements were recorded by a Seismoscope in Ashgabat.
