Silakhor Earthquake of 23 January 1909, Ms 7.4

On January 23, 1909, at 2:48 a.m local time, a catastrophic earthquake occurred in Silakhor Valley at the 33 N and 53E coordination. About 64 villages within the region were either completely destroyed or damaged beyond repair. Casualties were extensive between 6000-8000, occurring in 130 individual villages. Damage was worst within the epicentral area (Silakhor Valley) and surrounding valleys populated by domestic tribes. Signs of ground failure and landslides was evident for another 20–30 kilometers southeast of the epicenter.
